In a word, yes. It’s really not that simple though. Possible yes, but how, is the question. We know from many personal stories that is has been done, so we can look at these examples and find how it is possible to engineer your own digital presence and how people can accomplish their own success through social mediums.
It’s all about risks, and being willing to take those risks. Some have landed jobs just because they IM’d the right person at the right time. Some have taken their blogs to new, more profitable, heights. The point here is you’ve got to be willing to put yourself out there, the real you, not just a made up personality to fit an over-inflated avatar. Take the risk of being who you really are IRL, and doing it online.
Read the angles. Utilize the listening capabilities of social media to garner information, all the information you possibly can. Sometimes it can be as lucky as that one special tweet. Sometimes it’s asking that one special question. The avenues here are highly varied, but it’s much like the processes of creative problem solving. Listen to what is going on and do your best to but two and two together.
There is no one way to find a job through social media, but we have seen it done. Tailor your social media exposure to fit the job you want, while still being exactly who you are. Keep your eyes and ears open, and don’t be afraid to make that leap. You’ll never know what is on the other side untill you make that jump.
