Do You Really Need to be Blogging?
Blogging. Everybody’s doing it. Since everybody’s doing it, you probably need to be doing it too, right? Wrong. Blogging is a difficult time consuming world that is tough to get noticed in. Reasons to blog, or not to blog, are many and highly varied, and it really comes down to what you want. So, what do you want to get out of blogging?
“The bottom line is that blogging is like sex. You can’t fake it. You can’t fake passion. You can’t fake wanting to engage with the public. If you do, it will ultimately be an unsatisfying experience for both the blogger and their readers.” ~Kevin Anderson
So really, I’ll ask again, what do you want to gain from being a blogger? I am in social media as a profession. I am expected to blog. Does it gain me leads, clients, and riches? No. It is however a vehicle for me to share my ideas about social media. I gain a certain amount of credibility regarding my abilities in the 2.0 world from blogging. I am able to put my theories out there and let them be held to measure by the “experts”. But again, be it 2 hits, or 20,000 hits, it doesn’t make me any money.
Do you want to become a blogger to make yourself six figures or more? Good luck. From one single blog it is almost impossible to do. Current estimations on the amount of blogs out there are around 400 million active, English speaking blogs. That doesn’t take into account the thousands or tens of thousands that are started or stopped on a daily basis. Getting noticed under these conditions can be highly difficult. The ones that do, will have a very broad base in social media. The popular bloggers will be popular on other platforms as well.
Do you want to become a blogger to promote your product/service? This is a good way to start but do not limit yourself to just the blog. You will need to use those other lines of social media to be seen.
Do you want to start blogging to get into affiliate marketing? This can be profitable, but again, what are you going to write about? You will have to be able to match what you are writing about with what you are selling, and you will again need to reach a targeted audience through other social media avenues.
Do you want to get into blogging to talk about what you enjoy? Now that is the perfect reason to be blogging. Put your emotion out there to the universe. Hold your soul up to scrutiny. Be passionate and controversial.
Write something to suit yourself and many people will like it; write something to suit everybody and scarcely anyone will care for it.

Nothing can be better than putting your own personality, that part of you that makes you unique, into your writing.

I agree that passion is necessary. It is the reason I have less and less to say. If I can’t be relevant, interesting and am talking for talking sake, then I should walk away from the computer. Less is actually more when it comes to blogging. IMHO

I can’t imagine you not having something relevant to say. And yes, less can be so much more in blogging.

Loved reading your post Brian – it was just the affirmation I required at 2 am w a MUG of mud thick coffee
I am one of those individuals who blogs when I have something to say , or something simply is interesting to me and I want to share it with the rest of the cyber community . I love Web Design and web development ( and the arts in general ) – and this is what I stick to . I dont do it for the money or for the numbers – I do it simply because I love all of the things mentioned above .
However , your post definitely helps to clear up any misconceptions people may harbor when getting into Blogging . It should definitely and always be done out love & a respect for it , but overall : yes a passion !
Superb post , thank you
M.
