What I Should Have Learned 20 Years Ago (The Father Son Talk)
For whatever reason I am in an incredible mood today. For almost two months now I have quit smoking, I have started running, and have been playing indoor soccer. I’m feeling much better about myself, and for so many other reasons I have a beautiful life. All of these things I done to take a new direction with my life have got me thinking about a lot of the positive things I have learned along the way. Yep, you guessed it, this is a retrospective, warm-fuzzies, epiphany post. So bear with me while I get all of this sappiness out of my system.
What have I learned? Well, a few small, but very important lessons. So follow along, I hope you find something useful and be sure to share some of your life lessons in the comment section below.
Gratitude is key. Without it to remind us of the beauty of life, all we are left with is bitterness and skepticism.
Play the hand you were dealt. Have the courage to face challenges head on, it builds character. Start looking for a way through instead of a way out.
No Excuses. Stop making excuses, and replace them with ways to do better. Excuses are a waste of time and energy.
Be a student of life. Learn something new every day. The day you stop learning is the day you become obsolete, so keep learning.
Let others know where you Stand. Be uncompromising, and be up front when someone steps on your core values.
Never be afraid of a challenge. You put on your shoes like every other man. Now it comes down to who wants it more.
Work like hell. Everyone has a job to do so do it. Cross every “T” and dot every “I”.
Day Dream Often. On the weekend when you are relaxing embrace a day dream. During the week take action to preserve your dreams.
Service to others. Small, simple or important be a volunteer and give the very best of you.
Don’t take it Personal. Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself, self confidence shows that you’re comfortable in your own skin.
Ask for help. Life can be tough remember you never have to do it alone.
Looking over this it looks like a father son talk. Then again, if my father had told me these things, I wouldn’t have listened. Ya gotta learn them on your own.
I like your list because I relate to it. But you are right about the need to experience some of these things- life lessons teach you more than almost anything. Those experiences provide the foundation to build and excel.

I wish I knew these things growing up. I’m doing a gratitude journal and thanking for the abundance I have in life instead of focusing on what I don’t have.
I like them all. Even if people do a few they’ll be a better person. Do all of them and they’ll be unstoppable.

If we knew these things growing up then we wouldn’t have the life experience to learn them. I can write these down but no one will truly learn them until they experience them.
Thanks for your comments, Benny. Is your Gratitude Journal online? I’d love to see it. Also, you should check out my friend Daniel Brenton. He has what he calls Gratitude Watch.

It’s at #1 because without it, none of the others matter.

Letting others know where you stand is essential. There’s nothing more harmful to a relationship than hidden disagreement.

Agreed! And you only stand to gain respect for being honest and straightforward about your stance, in business or personal relationships.
